REMEMBRANCE

BRIAN TILLEY

Brian Tilley

On 13th May 2004, Brian Tilley was murdered in Iraq by 4 corrupt Iraqi police officers. The officers were eventually caught and imprisoned in Abu Graib prison. Shortly after; they were released on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Even though the corrupt men were identified by an eye witness, (who was also left for dead by these men) they are at liberty today.

For those that never had the privilege of knowing Brian, you really missed something. He was a gifted mountaineer although, I believe he would have preferred the word climber. He joined the Royal Marines as a lad and went on to serve most of his 22 years of military service in the SBS and was an instructor to his comrades and peers alike.

Brian was awarded the Queen's award for bravery in 1996 but would never tell you this. Brian was a philosopher and didn't suffer fools lightly but would always side with the under dog.

He never traded friends for gain,
and only gained in friends.
A soldier's soldier through and through,
until he met his end.
In this man and through his steel,
I really saw a lad.
He climbed the worlds highest peaks,
only to fall in Baghdad.

I could never do justice to you Brian, even with a million pages. I know that you would be happy to know that you left your mark on me my friend. I am honoured to have worked with you and that you considered me a pal and confidant. You are in my thoughts every day.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers".

Thanks for the beers Bri,
Martin.

The following message was sent from an Iraqi colleague "M" (name withheld) that Brian had worked with for over a year: (Thanks for these kind words M)

"Brian was proficient organiser with excellent man management and administrative skills. He had extensive experience in all aspects of UK Special Forces training and operations. Brian was capable of planning, initiating and implementing training programmes. Brian's character and persona enabled him to lead, manage, train, motivate and administer groups of people. Even under pressure, Brian always met his targets. He was so well organized, able to communicate at all levels, discreet and had an extremely high level of personal discipline. Brian's hallmarks were integrity and loyalty coupled with the ability to get the job done. We all miss him among us such a great man will stay alive in our mind."

It is our aim to arrange a trust fund in Brian's name. This fund will be used to help our fraternal members (and their families) who have been injured in hostile theatres and neglected and forgotten by the companies they deployed for. It is also our aim to ensure that the insurance companies do honour their policies and that all hiring companies concerned have a "Duty of care" to the injured, deceased and their families.

We hope that soon the Trust Fund will be set up, we would be glad to accept donations however small.
